in Navarro-Rosinés & al., Bull. Soc. linn. Provence, 58: 154, 2007.
Synonyms:
Distribution: C - Abr (TSB s.n.).
Description: Thallus crustose, areolate or verrucose-areolate, 2-12 mm wide, growing on the thalli of Calogaya clauzadeana. Areoles subsquamulose, scattered to crowded, conserving for a long time the form of the host, 0.6-1.8 mm wide, 0.4-0.8 mm thick, strongly convex, pale grey, but densely white-grey-pruinose, with brown to black margins and lower surface. Cortex 8-11 µm thick, of 1-2 layers of pale brown cells, covered with an epinecral layer and a thick layer of large crystals, the superficial layers 10-20 μm thick; medulla white, 300-600 µm thick, rather loose, filled by crystals and substrate particles, I-. Perithecia black, 0.16-0.26 mm across, globose, fully immersed in the areoles. Involucrellum absent; exciple 15-25 µm thick at base, paraplectenchymatous, colourless except around the ostiole; hymenium colourless, I+ reddish; hamathecium of periphyses along the ostiolar channel, pseudoparaphyses in upper part of the perithecium, and paraphyses disappearing early; pseudoparaphyses (10-)15-20 x 1.5-2.5 μm. Asci 8-spored, clavate, bitunicate, with a thin tholus reacting I-, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, (9-)10-12.5(-14) x (6-)7-9(-10.5) μm. Pycnidia black, globose immersed, Dermatocarpon-type, the wall colourless except at the brown apex. Conidia simple, bacilliform, straight or slightly curved, (4-)5-7(-8.5) x 0.5-1(-1.5) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a recently-described parasite on Calogaya clauzadeana, probably more widespread in Italy.
