Synonyms: Dermatocarpon helveticum (B. de Lesd.) Frey; Verrucaria helveticorum Zehetl.
Distribution: N - VG (Navarro-Rosinés & Roux 1994, Navarro-Rosinés & al. 2007). S - Si (Nimis & al. 1994).
Description: Thallus crustose, areolate or squamulose-areolate, forming irregular, 4-12 mm wide patches on the thalli of Leproplaca cirrochroa. Areoles (0.2-)0.3-0.6(-0.8) mm diam., 200-300 μm thick, slightly convex, grey brown with a whitish grey pruina. Cortex thin, of 1-2 layers of pale brown cells, generally covered by a thin epinecral layer; medulla white, I+ intensely blue. Perithecia black, 0.14-0.16 mm across, globose, immersed in the thallus. Involucrellum absent; exciple paraplectenchymatous, colourless except around the ostiole, I+ blue; hymenium colourless, I+ reddish; hamathecium of periphyses along the ostiolar channel, pseudoparaphyses in upper part of the perithecium, and paraphyses disappearing early. Asci 8-spored, clavate, bitunicate, with a thin tholus reacting I-, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 12-18 x (5.5-)7-8.5(-9.5) μm. Pycnidia black, immersed, oblong or ellipsoid, Dermatocarpon-type, the wall colourless except at the brown apex. Conidia simple, bacilliform,(3-)4-5 x 1-1.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: a lichenicolous lichen growing on the thalli of Leproplaca cirrochroa; certainly much more widespread throughout the country.
