Synonyms: Bacidia apiahica (Müll. Arg.) Zahlbr.; Woessia apiahica (Müll. Arg.) Sérus.
Distribution: C - Tosc (Puntillo & Ottonello 1997, Puntillo 2000, Ravera & al. 2015b). S - Camp, Cal (Puntillo & Vezda 1994, Puntillo 1995, 1996, 2000).
Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, ecorticate, grey-green, granulose to continuous-cracked, usually not producing goniocysts. Apothecia biatorine, usually numerous, constricted at base, 0.1-0.25(-0.5) mm across, yellow-orange to orange-red, with a flat to convex, epruinose disc, and a slightly prominent, finally excluded proper margin. Proper exciple paraplectenchymatous, without crystals, of very thin-walled (0.5-1 μm), not distinctly radiating hyphae, the outer rim yellowish green, the medullary part colourless; epithecium colourless or yellowish green, indistinctly delimited from the hymenium, K-, N-; hymenium 30-50 μm high, mostly colourless; paraphyses mostly simple, (0.8-)1-1.5 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cells clavate or only slightly thickened, to 3-4(-7) μm wide; hypothecium poorly developed, colourless to straw-coloured. Asci 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, the apical dome K/I+ dark blue with a pale, conical-pointed apical cushion (axial mass) never penetrating through the entire d-layer, the wall K/I-, but the thin outer gel K/I+ blue, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 3(-5)-septate, hyaline, needle-like, straight, not twisted in the asci, 28-38 x 1-2 μm. Pycnidia immersed, colourless. Conidia filiform, curved, 0-l-septate, 30-43 x 0.5-1 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the cells 5-12(-14) μm in diam. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances. Note: a foliicolous pan- to subtropical species, in Italy restricted to very humid and warm forests near the coast. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Endangered” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
