Chaenothecopsis ochroleuca (Körb.) Tibell & K. Ryman

Nova Hedwigia, 60: 208, 1995. Basionym: Calicium ochroleucum Körb. - Parerga Lichenol.: 295, 1863.
Synonyms: Chaenothecopsis koerberi (Nádv.) Tibell; Strongyleuma koerberi Nádv.
Distribution: N - TAA (Tibell & Ryman 1995, Puntillo & Puntillo 2009, Brackel 2016).
Description: Thallus not evident, not lichenized. Apothecia short-stalked, 0.3-0.5 mm high, the stalk 0.06-0.1 mm thick, whitish, coarsely granular, formed by thin-walled, hyaline, irregularly arranged hyphae. Capitulum hemispherical, 0.1-0.4 mm across, black; mazaedium not present. Exciple of dark brown, intertwined hyphae; epithecium poorly developed; hymenium yellowish brown, sometimes with deep red, amorphous crystals; hypothecium pale brown. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, with a thickened apex penetrated by a first narrow, later broadened canal, formed singly, persisting until the spores are mature, with 1-seriately arranged ascospores. Ascospores 1-celled, medium brown, fusiform with pointed ends, 6-9(-12) x 3-4(-4.5) µm, with a minutely areolate surface. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: all parts of the capitulum N-, K+ red in a rapidly fading reaction. Chemistry: an unidentified pigment in the capitulum.
Note: on the thalli of Verseghya thysanophora, doubtfully also of epiphytic Haematomma ochroleucum, in humid forests below the subalpine belt; perhaps more widespread in the beech belt of the Alps.
Growth form: Lichenicolous fungus
Substrata: bark
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
