Synonyms: Arthopyrenia subdiscrepans (Nyl.) Zahlbr.; Merismatium discrepans (J. Lahm ex Arnold) Triebel; Verrucaria subdiscrepans Nyl.
Distribution: N - TAA (Roux & al. 2002, Hafellner 2011, Brackel 2016). C- Sar (Brackel & Berger 2019).
Description: Thallus not visible, not lichenized, growing on endolithic lichens, especially Protoblastenia-species. Perithecia (pseudothecia) black, c. 0.2 mm across, one-third to half-immersed in the host. Involucrellum absent; exciple brown throughout, K+ darker brown, greenish blue around the ostiole; hamathecium of short pseudoparaphyses and periphyses forming a crown above the asci and lining the ostiolar canal, interascal filaments lacking, the hymenial gel I+ red, K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, subcylindrical to narrowly clavate, thick-walled when young, without ocular chamber, K/I-. Ascospores submuriform, dark brown, divided by oblique septa into (3-)4(-6) cells, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, (10-)13-17(-20) x (7-)8.5-12(-14) µm, surrounded by a halo at least when young. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a rather rare species, growing on the ascocarps of endolithic calcicolous lichens (especially Protoblastenia-species), mostly in upland areas. Most records are from the central European mountains, but there are also some records from sites at low elevations in other parts of Europe. For further details see Hafellner (2011).
