Synonyms:
Distribution: N - Frl (Puntillo & Puntillo 2009, Brackel 2016), TAA (Thor & Nascimbene 2007, Brackel 2016).
Description: Thallus not evident, not lichenized. Apothecia short-stalked, 0.4-0.7(-1.1) mm high, the stalk 0.06-0.12 mm thick, simple or rarely branched, dull black, with a coarsely granular surface deriving from clusters of sclerotized hyphae, the outer part formed of irregular groups of sclerotized hyphae, the inner part of aeruginose, thick-walled, strongly arched hyphae forming an almost paraplectenchymatous tissue, K+ yellowish brown, N+ pale aeruginose. Capitulum narrowly conical, 0.1-0.3(-0.4) mm across. Exciple poorly developed, reddish brown, K+ dark yellowish brown, N+ yellowish brown; mazaedium well-developed, green-black, not higher than the width of the capitulum, with persisting, sclerotized paraphyses with a coarse surface. Asci 8-spored, broadly ellipsoid, formed in chains from ascogenous hyphae lacking croziers, with a single functional wall layer, deliquescing at maturity. Ascospores 1-septate, blue-green, broadly ellipsoid, 5-7 x 2-2.5(-2.8) µm, with a distinct ornamentation of spirally arranged ridges. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: exciple K+ dark yellowish brown, N+ yellowish brown; stalk K+ yellowish brown, N+ pale aeruginose. Chemistry: without lichen substances, except an aeruginose pigment.
Note: on decorticated stumps of conifers heavily attacked by brown rot fungi, more rarely of deciduous trees, often in cavities and cracks, confined to humid upland areas; probably overlooked in the Alps, but certainly never common.
