Description: Thallus crustose, not lichenized, endosubstratic and usually not evident. Ascomata perithecioid, aggregated in number of (1-)4-12 into irregularly shaped, (0.2)0.4-1(-1.5) mm wide, black pseudostromata made of dark brown hyphae, with an overlying black wall which is not continuous below the hamathecium. Hamathecium of branched, not anastomosing, non-amyloid, 1.5-2 µm thick pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, obclavate, tapering to apex, fissitunicate, with two functional wall layers, K/I-. Ascospores 1-septate with eusepta, at first hyaline but soon turning dark brown, ellipsoid to ovoid, constricted at septum, the two cells slightly unequal, 18-27 x 5-7 µm, the wall not ornamented, often with a distinct, 1-1.5 thick (in K) perispore. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a mainly western, rare species, most frequent on the smooth bark of Alnus.
