Distribution: N - Piem (TSB 32987), Lig (31066).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, whitish to whitish grey, verrucose-granulose, sorediate, often delimited by a shiny, thick, pinkish grey prothallus. Soralia at fist limited to the top of small warts, later confluent and forming a sorediate crust. Apothecia rare, lecanorine, up to 3 mm across, pale brown to reddish brown disc, a usually sorediate thalline margin, and often a prominent excipular ring. Thalline exciple corticate; epithecium brownish, C+ red; hymenium colourless; hypothecium yellowish. Asci (4-)6-8(-12)-spored, with thick, amyloid walls, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, mostly ellipsoid 20-55 x 10-35 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex K- or K+ pale yellow, C+ pink, KC+ pink, P-; medulla C-, KC-; soralia sometimes P+ pale orange. Chemistry: gyrophoric (major) and lecanoric (trace to minor) acids, often with a single fatty acid of the murolic acid complex.Note: This name is used here for sorediate morphs of an Ochrolechia with swollen areoles and a secondary chemistry identical to that of O. frigida (gyrophoric acid syndrome); O. inaequatula s.str. is based on a type from western Alaska. On acid soil and plant debris in alpine situations, formerly subsumed under O. frigida (perhaps only a form of the latter) and probably more widespread in the Alps.
