Ramalina europaea Gasparyan, Sipman & Lücking
Lichenologist, 49: 306, 2017.
Synonyms:
Distribution: N - Frl (TSB).
Description: Thallus fruticose, pale yellowish green to green, erect to subpendulous, of discrete lobes which often coalesce to form extensive swards, up to 1(-3) cm long, several times palmately or dichotomously branched from a narrow or expanded holdfast. Lobes usually flattened, up to 3 mm wide, solid, usually developing numerous tiny, irregular, somehow spine-like lateral lobules bearing a terminal, punctiform soralium, the lower side often with ovoid excavate depressions (especially evident in epiphytic samples), the soralia in mature thalli often terminal on widened, somewhat vaulted lobes, but never becoming large and labriform, the soredia granular, 50-70 µm wide, easily abraded and leaving a whitish surface on the soralia. Cortex thin, paraplectenchymatous, the lower part with chondroid strands; medulla white, compact. Apothecia very rare, lecanorine, 1-3 mm across, with a yellowish green disc. Epithecium pale brownish-olive; hymenium colourless, c. 40 µm high; paraphyses thick-walled, richly branched in upper part; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, 35–40 × c. 12 μm, the apical dome K/I+ dark blue with a pale, conical-pointed apical cushion (axial mass) never penetrating through the entire d-layer, the wall K/I-, but the thin outer gel K/I+ blue, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, (10-)12-14(-15) x 4-5 µm, straight or slightly curved. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: cortex with usnic acid; medulla with evernic acid.Note: a recently-described species, apparently widespread in Central Europe, found both on rocks and tree bark. The Italian material of R. pollinaria should be checked against this species, which is characterized by the punctiform soralia borne terminally on tiny spine-like, lateral branches, and by the farinose soredia.
