Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, brownish orange, parasitic on cyanobacterial lichens, consisting of dispersed to crowded, flat to convex, dull, epruinose, up to 1 mm wide areoles, without a distinct prothallus, paraplectenchymatous throughout. Apothecia zeorine, yellow-orange, dispersed or grouped, round, 0.3-1(-3) mm across, adnate, with a flat to slightly convex disc, a paler, thick, waxy, shining thalline margin, and often a thin, reddish orange parathecial ring. Thalline exciple corticate, c. 20 μm thick; proper exciple laterally expanded; epithecium brownish yellow, K+ red; hymenium colourless, 65-70 µm high; paraphyses free, slender, sometimes submoniliform in upper part, the apical cells 4-5 µm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, narrowly clavate, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (9-)10-13(-15) x (3.5-)5-7(-8) µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 2.5-3.5 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).

Note: on steep rock faces of mineral-rich schists with variable contents of calcium, often growing on cyanobacterial lichens (Spilonema); widespread in the Holarctic region, with scattered records from the Alps, outside the Italian territory: to be looked for in the Italian Alps.
