Description: Thallus inapparent, not lichenized, developing inside the thalli of Roccella-species. Apothecia arthonioid, black, sometimes bluish-pruinose, at first more or less immersed in the thallus of the host, becoming sessile, 0.1-0.3 mm across, mainly located on the tips of branches of the host thallus. Epithecium dark olivaceous to almost black; hymenium colourless, c. 25 μm high, I+ red, K/I+ blue; paraphysoids branched and anastomosing; hypothecium pale to dark brown. Asci 8-spored clavate, semi-fissitunicate, with a large apical dome, and a distinct ocular chamber. Ascospores 2-3-septate, hyaline, narrowly soleiform, mostly with a wide and shorter upper cell and narrower and longer lower cell, 10-12(-13.5) x 3−4.5(-5) μm. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a lichenicolous fungus growing on the thalli of Roccella-species, described from the Galapagos Islands, and later found also in Macaronesia and in the Mediterranean region; to be looked for in Italy.
