Description: Thallus not lichenized, inapparent, developing on species of Protoparmeliopsis. Apothecia arthonioid, emarginate, black, 0.1-1 mm across, often clustered in small groups, flat or slightly convex, round or rarely irregular in shape, immersed in the apothecial disc or sometimes the thallus of the host lichen, often filling the entire apothecium. Proper exciple poorly developed; epithecium brown to olivaceous brown, K- or K+ olivaceous green, N-, covered in a 2-8 μm thick, colourless, gelatinous layer; hymenium colourless to pale yellow-brown, 40-50 μm high, I+ red, K/I+ blue; paraphysoids branched and anastomosing, brownish to olivaceous green in the upper 3-9(-15) μm, the apical cells capitate, to 3-5 μm wide; hypothecium colourless, to >100 μm high, I+ blue, K/I+ blue. Asci (6-)8-spored, broadly clavate to elongate-ellipsoid, semi-fissitunicate, with a large apical dome, a distinct ocular chamber, and a usually poorly visible K/I+ blue, ring-shaped structure in tholus. Ascospores (1-)2-3-septate, not or only slightly constricted at septum, hyaline, ellipsoid, 10-15 x (3.5-) 4-5.5 (-6.5) μm, thin-walled, the perispore absent or very thin. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.Note: a lichenicolous fungus on species of Protoparmeliopsis. Known among others from Spain and Turkey, to be looked for in Italy.
