Description: Thallus crustose, whitish or whitish grey, thin and continuous, intermingled with moss remains. Perithecia black, globose, hardly immersed in the thallus, 0.2-0.3 mm across, single or usually aggregated into compact, up to 0.8 mm wide clusters of 2–4(–8). Involucrellum well-developed, black, extending almost to the base; exciple pale brown or colourless, completely surrounding the perithecium; paraphysoids 1.5–2 μm thick, simple or branched and anastomosed at the base. Asci 8-spored, clavate, bitunicate-fissitunicate, shortly stalked at base, the apex thickened into a tholus, with a narrow ocular chamber, I-. Ascospores 3-septate, slightly constricted at septa, hyaline, subfusiform, (17.5-)19-21 x 4.5-6 μm. Pycnidia unknown. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances. Note: a boreal-montane, subatlantic species encrusting bryophytes in terricolous lichen communities; there are only a few records from Scandinavia, the British Isles and Central Europe, including the Eastern Alps (Austria), but the species might have been overlooked or confused with other lichens. To be looked for in Italy.
