Description: Thallus crustose, poorly evident, consisting of a few algal cells surrounded by hyphae, especially around the perithecia. Perithecia dark grey to black, greenish when wet, 0.1-0.2 mm across, more or less pyriform, sessile, mostly in small clusters on the midrib region of the upper surface of inrolled leaflets of Polytrichum. Exciple dull green, 20-30 μm thick laterally, 40-60 μm thick in the apical region, of strongly anastomosing, conglutinate, to 1 μm thick hyphae with narrow lumina; paraphysoids thread-like, persistent, strongly branched and anastomosing; periphysoids absent; hymenial gel I+ reddish or I+ blue at low concentrations, K/I+ blue. Asci (4-) 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, thick-walled, with two functional wall layers, the outer layer I+ blue, with a very faintly I+ blue apical plug, 110-130 (-160) x 18-23 μm. Ascospores muriform, with 3-5 transverse septa and 1-3 incomplete longitudinal septa, hyaline, ellipsoid to fusiform-ellipsoid, 17-25(-27) x 8-11.5 μm, the outer wall much thicker than the septa. Photobiont chlorococcoid (Elliptochloris), the algal cells surrounded by a gelatinous sheath. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-. UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: an arctic-alpine to boreal-montane species growing on the upper side of leaflets of Polytrichum, easily overlooked when the moss is dry and the leaflets enrolled; apparently rare, with a few scattered records throughout the Alps outside the Italian territory; to be looked for in the Italian Alps.
