Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic or thinly episubstratic, grey-white or pale greenish grey, continuous or granulose. Apothecia lecideine, numerous, rounded to irregular, often tuberculate, isolated or rarely clustered, 0.2-0.6(-0.8) mm across, with a pale yellowish brown to brown-black, flat to strongly convex, epruinose disc and a thin, slightly darker proper margin. Proper exciple of radiating, anastomosing hyphae; epithecium brown to reddish brown, pale grey-green in dark apothecia, without an epipsamma, K-; hymenium colourless, without oil droplets, c. 110–140 μm high; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched and anastomosing; hypothecium pale yellow, 170-190 μm high, K+ intensifying golden yellow. Asci (8-)12-16-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the I+ blue tholus with a wide, I+ dark blue tube structure that expands towards the top, without a pale axial body, Micarea-type, c. 16-20 x 80-95 μm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (6.5-)7.5-9(-11) x (3.5-)4-4.8 μm. Pycnidia rare, globose, partly immersed, reddish brown, c. 80 μm across. Conidia thread-like, 10-15 x 0.5-0.8 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: secalonic acid A in the hypothecium.Note: a recently-described, probably holarctic species known from Scandinavia, Central Europe, the Caucasus and North America, growing on bark and wood, mostly in old-growth forests. The species, which perhaps belongs to Puttea, could be present also in the Italian Alps, and should be looked for there.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark and lignum
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
