Description: Thallus crustose, hardly visible or reduced to a few small granules around the apothecia, black when dry, brown-black when wet. Apothecia thallinocarp, 0.2-0.4 mm across, at first punctiform and urceolate, then with an expanded, concave to flat, brown-black disc and thin but distinct thalline margin. Proper exciple very thin; epithecium orange-brown; hymenium and hypothecium colourless. Asci 16-32-spored, cylindrical-clavate, thin-walled. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 6-12 x 3-6 µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial, chroococcoid, the cells enclosed in yellowish brown gelatinous sheaths. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: on dry, sunny surfaces of calcareous or basic siliceous rocks (e.g. basalt) subject to short periods of water seepage; overall distribution poorly known, with a few scattered records from the Alps and the Mediterranean region, outside Italian territory. To be looked for in Italy. The species will be soon recombined into Lichinella (Schultz, in prep.).
