Ann. Mus. Civ. Stor. Nat. Genova, 66: 237, 1953
Synonyms:
Distribution: N - Lig (Servít 1953).
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic or hemiendosubstratic, sordid grey, sometimes finely rimose near the perithecia, without a distinct prothallus, the surface densely and very finely granulose, the granules whitish, 0.01-0.02 mm across. Cortex not developed; algal layer mostly immersed in the rock. Perithecia black, 0.1-0.2 mm wide, numerous, semi-immersed, the projecting part hemispherical, up to 0.15 mm wide, covered with a thin thalline layer in lower part. Involucrellum limited to the upper part of the perithecium, adpressed to exciple, up to 35 μm thick, brown-black, the surface covered by a colourless, 4-6 μm thick layer; exciple globose, up to 0.2 mm across, the wall pigmented only in uppermost part, otherwise colourless, up to 12 μm thick in lower part; hamathecium of up to 20 μm long periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, oblong-ellipsoid, 15-17 x c. 7 μm, the wall c. 0.3 μm thick. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a very poorly understood calcicolous species, known only from the type collection near Spotorno.
Growth form: Crustose endolithic
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
