Synonyms: Lecanora varia (Hoffm.) Ach. var. subravida (Nyl.) Nyl.
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, fully endosubstratic or with scattered, up to 0.1 mm wide warts, up to 0.8 mm thick, whitish, pale brown or greyish brown to beige, matt, ecorticate, usually forming large patches. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.5-0.85 mm across, sessile and constricted at base, with a persistently flat, beige, ochre to dark brown or black, epruinose or finely white-pruinose disc and a distinct, smooth to finally knobby-crenulate, persistent thalline margin. Thalline exciple 160-190 µm wide, the cortex (16-)18-33(40) µm wide laterally and (33-)56-91(-116) µm wide at base, of anticlinally arranged, conglutinated hyphae, the medullary part filled with granules: proper exciple poorly developed, colourless; epithecium colourless to faintly brown, with an epipsamma of small yellowish granules, N-; hymenium colourless, without granules, (45-)50-60(-70) µm high; paraphyses simple to rarely sparingly branched, 1.5-2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 2-3.5 μm wide, the gel sheath at apices 2.5-5 μm wide; hypothecium colourless, (60-)110-165(-250) µm high. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, the tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, (7-)9.6-10(-10.7) x (3.5-)5-6(-7) µm. Macropycnidia rare, 120-140 µm across, producing falcate macroconidia measuring 9-10 x 3.5-4 µm; micropycnidia very rare, 50-70 µm across, producing curved microconidia measuring 7-8 x c. 0.8 µm; leptopycnidia abundant, globose, c. 90 µm across, producing thread-like, curved leptoconidia measuring 10.8-11 x 0.7-0.9 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K+ faintly yellow or K-, C-, KC+ faintly yellow, P-. Chemistry: usnic or isousnic acid, ±pseudoplacodiolic (trace) and squamatic acid (found in a single specimen).Note: on wood, or on the bark of old trunks of conifers, with several scattered, mostly ancient records in the Alps, all outside Italian territory; to be looked for in the Italian Alps. For further details see van den Boom & Brand (2008), Svensson & al. (2024), and Ivanovich & al. (2025).
