Description: Thallus minutely fruticose, ecorticate, subgelatinous when wet, homoiomerous, forming coralloid pillows to 0.8 cm diam and to 4(-5) mm tall, black when dry, epruinose or rarely pruinose. Branches subcylindrical, erect, granular in lower part, apically often swollen and subglobose. Central part of thallus without photobionts, of loose hyphae. Apothecia not known. Photobiont cyanobacterial, chroococcoid (Gloeocapsa), with a few cells (5-7 μm diam.) the peripheral ones surrounded by a blue-violet gelatinous sheath. Spot test: K-, C., KC., P., UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a calcicolous species known only in the sterile state (and generic placement therefore uncertain), found on moist limestone rocks in gorges and similar sites with high air humidity; so far only recorded from the Eastern (Austria) and the Western Alps (France); to be looked for in Italy. The name is invalid.
