Lecania lesdainii (Samp.) Zahlbr.
Cat. Lich. Univ., 5: 735, 1928. Basionym: Lecanora lesdainii Samp. - Brotéria, sér. bot., 14: 73, fig. 2, 1916
Synonyms:
Distribution: C - Sar (Zedda 2002).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, continuous to rimose-areolate, whitish to pale green-grey, delimited by a conspicuous fimbriate, white prothallus. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.5-1 mm across, closely adnate, scattered to crowded, round to deformed by mutual compression, with an initially flat, then convex, pale brown to finally brown-black disc, and a smooth, often wavy, whitish thalline margin which tends to be excluded in old apothecia. Thalline exciple thick, of radially arranged hyphae extending below the hypothecium, the algae often limited to the basal parts; epithecium dark brown; hymenium colourless or pale wine-red in lower part, I+ blue; paraphyses very thin, richly branched and anastomosing; hypothecium brownish wine-red. Asci 8-spored. Ascospores (0-)1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid to narrowly ellipsoid, often slightly curved, 8-18 x 2-7 µm, with a thick septum. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: unknown, likely without lichen substances.Note: a poorly known epiphytic species (found on Quercus ilex, Viburnum tinus and an old dead poplar) which perhaps does not belong to Lecania, described from Portugal and reported from a few stations in Corsica, Sardinia and the forest of Iraty in the French Pyrenees (see Sussey 2012, Roux & Coll. 2014). The sample from Sardinia was collected on the trunk of Quercus ilex in a closed, well-preserved forest with old trees.
