Description: Thallus crustose to microfruticose, subgelatinous when wet, consisting of densely packed, small, erect, up to 1 mm tall, isidia-like branches forming small, granulose, pillow-like areoles, black to dark reddish brown when dry, brighter reddish when wet, more or less distinctly paraplectenchymatous. Apothecia pycnoascocarps, globose, perithecioid, apical on the branches, with a pore-like to urceolate, dark reddish brown disc and a persistent thalline margin. Epithecium colourless to brownish; hymenium colourless; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched in upper part; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, broadly clavate, rather thick-walled, the outer wall I+ blue, without apical amyloid structures. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, 8-12 x 5-8 µm. Pycnidia black, terminal on the branches. Conidia oblong-bacilliform. Photobiont cyanobacterial, chroococcoid (Gloeocapsa), the cells single or clustered, surrounded by reddish-violet gelatinous sheaths, 7-10 µm wide (incl. sheaths). Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: on sunny siliceous rocks, mainly in seepage tracks, mostly at low elevations. Known from several localities from Macaronesia to southern Central Europe; to be looked for in Italy.
