Distribution:

Description: Thallus crustose, mostly endosubstratic and poorly evident, sometimes very loosely associated with Trentepohlioid algae but not lichenized. Perithecia black, 0.15-0.25(-0.3) mm across, with a dark brown involucrellum reacting K+ olive-green, well-developed and 20-30 µm thick only around the ostiole, confluent with exciple, extending laterally and forming a distinct, conspicuous, up to 0.35 mm wide, grey-black fringe around the perithecium, formed of hyphae and incorporated bark cells. Exciple often poorly developed to absent in lower part, of interwoven hyphae. Hamathecium of branched and anastomosing, septate pseudoparaphyses; hymenial gel I-. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, with two functional wall layers, fissitunicate, with an internal apical beak, K/I-. Ascospores, 1-septate, not or only slightly constricted at septum, brown, ellipsoid, with subequal cells, 12-20 x 6-9 µm, the wall warted, often with a thin gelatinous sheath swelling in K. Pycnidia black, resembling the perithecia, 0.05-0.10(-0.12) mm across; conidiogenous cells enteroblastic, elongate-ampulliform, unbranched, acrogenous. Conidia ellipsoid to doliiform, brown, thickened centrally internally and sometimes ± distoseptate, (9-)11-12.5(-14) x 4-7 µm. Photobiont: absent. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.

Note: a non-lichenized species known from Central and Northern Europe, growing on the bark of Betula and Populus. To be looked for in Italy.
