Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose-placodioid, episubstratic, attached to substratum, yellow to ochraceous yellow, slightly pruinose, occasionally somewhat whitish in central parts, forming more or less well-delimited, 3-8 mm wide rosettes. Central areoles polygonal or irregular, flat, 0.3-0.9 mm wide, often absent and then substituted by the lobe bases. Marginal lobes abundantly branched and imbricate, 0.2-1.4 mm long, 0.2-0.9 mm wide, convex at base, but flat and broadened toward tips, where they slightly rise from the substratum. Cortex mainly para-scleroplectenchymatous, with abundant crystals, medulla white, the lower part also with abundant crystals soluble in N, insoluble in K. Apothecia lecanorine or zeorine, 0.2-1.2(-1.8) mm across, rounded or deformed by mutual compression, grouped at the center of thallus and especially at the base of lobes, mostly sessile, sometimes slightly constricted at base, with a flat or slightly convex, orange to brownish-orange, epruinose, smooth disc, a slightly prominent, usually paler proper margin and an often persistent thalline margin concolorous with thallus. Thalline exciple 25-125 µm wide; proper exciple 25-50(-80) µm wide (widest in pseudolecanorine apothecia); epithecium golden yellow, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless; paraphyses septate, mostly simple, with marked constrictions, the apical cells 5.5-6 µm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (8.5-)9.5-12.5(-14) x (4-)4.5-6(-6.5) µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (2-)2.5-4(-4.5) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ purple-red, C+ faintly orange-red, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).Note: on steeply inclined to vertical faces of calcareous rocks with some water seepage after rain, often under overhangs at the base of cliffs. Widespread but not always recognized in Europe, from the Iberian Peninsula to Scandinavia, with a few scattered records from the Alps (outside Italian territory). To be looked for in Italy.
