Synonyms:
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, continuous or slightly rimose, whitish to pale grey, often delimited by a dark prothalline line, sorediate. Soralia white, well-delimited, 0.1-0.3(-0.4) mm wide, rounded, punctiform to finally maculiform, flat to slightly convex, with farinose to finely granular soredia. Cortex densely filled with granules dissolving in K, photobiont layer and medulla with clusters of coarse crystals not dissolving in K. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.2-0.4(-0.7) mm across, at first subimmersed, then subsessile, with a scarlet red, mostly flat disc and a persistent, smooth to crenulate, sometimes partially sorediate thalline margin. Proper exciple very thin; epithecium bright orange-red, finely granular, K+ violet-red; hymenium colourless, 50-60(-70) µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses simple, the apical cells not swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, with an amyloid apical dome, approaching the Lecanora-type. Ascospores (8-)9-12(-16)-septate, hyaline, elongate, straight to curved, (50-)60-80 x 4-5(-5.5) µm, more or less attenuated at one end. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and soralia K+ pale yellow, C-, KC+ yellow, P+ pale yellow, UV-. Chemistry: thallus with atranorin and placodiolic acid, apothecia with anthraquinones. Note: a rare, mainly western species also reported from Switzerland, growing on more or less smooth bark, sometimes on branches in humid situations. To be looked for in Italy.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
