Description: Thallus foliose, homoiomerous, gelatinous when wet, 3-8 cm across, c. 200-400 µm thick when moist, black and markedly shiny when dry, the lobes 5-10(-15) mm wide, with 2-6 mm wide lobules, at first - sometimes permanently - strongly adnate, repeatedly furcate or seemingly fan-like branched, the lobules usually with a more or less entire margin, often distinctly plicate; lower surface usually paler, with scattered white hapters. Apothecia usually numerous and dense, often crowded and covering older parts of the thallus, lecanorine, 1.5-3(-4) mm across, with a brown to blackish, concave to flat disc and a rather thick, rugulose-granulose to somewhat lobulate thalline margin. Proper exciple thin, euthyplectenchymatous; epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, I+ blue; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched-furcate in upper part; hypothecium colourless to yellowish, I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the apex strongly thickened, the apical dome K/I+ pale blue, with a downwardly projecting K/I+ deep blue tubular structure. Ascospores 3-septate, hyaline, rounded and broader at one end, pointed at the other, 20-26 x 8-10 µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells in long chains). Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: an arctic-alpine, circumpolar species growing on mosses over calcareous rocks, with a single record from the Alps of Austria. To be looked for in the Italian Alps.
