Lepra albescens var. corallina auct.

Synonyms: Pertusaria albescens (Huds.) M. Choisy & Werner var. corallina auct. non (Zahlbr.) J.R. Laundon; Pertusaria henrici sensu Erichsen
Distribution: N - Ven, Lomb, Emil, Lig. C - Tosc, Laz, Sar. S - Camp, Pugl, Bas, Cal, Si.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, continuous to fissured, whitish, pale grey or greenish grey, conspicuously zoned at margins, often delimited by a white prothallus, not tasting bitter. Central parts of thallus with diffuse, 0.1-0.2 mm wide, pseudocoralloid, isidia-like, whitish granules giving rise to granular soredia which usually become confluent in the center of the thallus. Apothecia not found in Italian material. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: allopertusaric (major) and dihydropertusaric (minor) acids.
Note: a strain with the secondary chemistry of var. albescens but with a different morphology, the spreading thallus being widely covered by isidioid structures, usually lacking conspicuous orbicular soralia. Here and there in Europe including the Alps but older records need chemical reinvestigation. The nomenclature is unresolved.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by isidia, or isidia-like structures (e.g. schizidia)
