Description: Thallus not evident, not lichenized, developing on the resin of deciduous trees. Apothecia short-stalked, pin-like, often clustered, 0.2-0.4 mm high, the stalk slender, 0.03-0.06 mm thick, dark brown but often paler in lower part, the inner part pale, consisting of interwoven hyphae with strongly swollen walls and c. 1 µm thick lumina, the outer part darker, of reddish to violet-red periclinally arranged hyphae with elongated cells . Capitulum black, obconical to subglobose, (0.06-)0.08-0.18(-0.25) mm across; mazaedium absent. Exciple poorly developed, 5-10 µm thick, reddish to yellowish brown, formed as a continuation of the outer layers of the stalk; epithecium thin, poorly developed, reddish to yellowish brown; hypothecium pale wine-red to greyish red. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical or narrowly clavate, with a thickened apex penetrated by a narrow canal, persisting until the uniseriately arranged spores are mature. Ascospores 1-celled, medium brown, ellipsoid, (6-)7-8(-9.8) x 2-3 µm, with a smooth wall. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: all negative, except the outer layers of the stalk, which react K+ dark grey-violet. Chemistry: without lichen substances, except an unidentified pigment.
Note: a rare species growin on the exudates of deciduous trees (Acer, Tilia), known from Germany and Russia. To be looked for in Italy.
