Description: Thallus not evident, not lichenized, developing on the resin of conifers. Apothecia long-stalked, pin-like, 0.4-1.4 mm high, the stalk 0.05-0.17 mm thick, yellow-brown to black, rarely branched, in section appearing yellow, greenish brown or green, of more or less periclinally arranged and slightly intertwined, 5-8 μm wide cells. Capitulum black to bluish black, lenticular to subglobose, 0.15-0.75 mm across; mazaedium absent. Exciple well developed, yellow-brown to green, the cells c, 6 μm wide, with a 1.5-2 μm thick wall, the lumina sometimes filled with a dark pigment; epithecium brownish, 1-3 μm thick; paraphyses 45-55 x 1.5-2 μm, septate, branched once or twice in lower part, the upper parts crown- or tree-like, the apical cells swollen, some o them filled with brownish, reflective material; hypothecium colourless to grey-green, of thick-walled cells. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, with a strongly thickened apex penetrated by a narrow canal, formed singly, persisting until the spores are mature. Ascospores 1-celled, grey-green to brown, ellipsoid to ovoid, 5-7.8 x 2.9-4.6 µm, with a smooth wall. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: all parts of ascomata usually K-, N-. Chemistry: an unidentified green pigment.
Note: a species described from North America and also known from Scandinavia, Spain and Switzerland, growing on the resin of coniferous trees (mainly Abies and Picea (see Tuovila & al. 2011). To be looked for in Italy.
