Description: Thallus not developed, not lichenized, the pycnidia developing on the thalli of epiphytic Ochrolechia-species. Pycnidia glossy black, smooth, at first subglobose and immersed in the host thallus, but soon projecting and elongating vertically, often laterally flattened, 0.3-0.5 mm across, 0.5-0.8 mm tall, the wall splitting in the upper part trough irregular cracks, eventually bending down at the upper edge, partly exposing the conidiogenous layer. Pycnidial wall 20-35 µm thick, of pale to medium brown, densely interwoven and closely packed, 3-6 µm thick hyphae with gelatinous, 0.8-1.2 µm thick walls; upper part of the inner layer made of subhyaline, loose, branched, thin-walled, 1.5-2 µm thick hyphae. Conidiophores arising from the inner wall of the lower half of the pycnidial cavity, septate, the cells cylindrical or irregularly swollen, often branched, 1.5–2.5 µm wide. Conidiogenous cells lateral or terminal, holoblastic, elongate-ampulliform with a long, narrow neck, usually colourless, more rarely pale to medium brown at maturity, smooth-walled, (9.5-)11-16(-18.5) x (1.5-)2-2.5(-3) µm. Conidia acrogenous, arising singly, simple, at first hyaline but turning brown at maturity, triangular in outline when observed from above, with four filiform, hyaline appendages, three of them (3-)4-6(-7.5) µm long and 0.6-1 µm thick, the basal one up to 0.8 µm long and 1-1.5 µm thick, the conidial body (without appendages) (4.5-)5-5.5(-6.5) µm wide, (5-)5.5-6(-6.5) µm tall.Note: a recently-described, sterile, non-lichenized fungus growing on the thalli of epiphytic Ochrolechia-species, characterized by the peculiar conidia with thread-like appendages, known from North, Central and South America and described on material from Austria (Styria), on Ochrolechia arborea (see Ertz & al. 2023). To be looked for in Italy.
