Apothecia stalked, pin-like, 0.6-1.8 mm high, the stalk 0.08-0.1 mm thick, glossy black, made up of a 20–25 μm wide, reddish brown outer part of interwoven hyphae with thickened walls, and a central part consisting of hyaline, periclinally arranged hyphae. Capitulum 0.25-0.4 mm across, obconical to lenticular, shiny black. Exciple 35-60 μm wide, reddish brown to brown in outer part, consisting of isodiametrical to elongated 7-12 µm wide cells forming a pseudoparenchymatous tissue, in the uppermost part with small and heavily pigmented cells, the innermost part of periclinally arranged, thinner cells; mazaedium absent; epithecium dark brown; hypothecium pale green, 65-90 μm high. Asci cylindrical, 52-63 µm long, formed singly, with a single functional layer, strongly and uniformly thickened at apex, without a canal, with uniseriately arranged ascospores, persisting until the spores are mature. Ascospores 1-celled, dark brown, fusiform to ellipsoid, (7.5-)8-9(-10.7) x (3.5)4-5(-5.8) µm, with a smooth to minutely warted wall. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: reddish brown parts of the ascocarps K+ intensifying red. Chemistry: without lichen substances, except a reddish brown pigment.
Note: a non-lichenized saprobe described from Australia, and also known from North America and Southern Europe (Spain and Portugal); the Mediterranean samples were mostly growing on the bark of broad-leaved trees (Olea, Quercus). To be looked for in Italy.
