Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic and poorly evident, rarely thinly episubstratic and granulose, <100 µm thick, ecorticate. Apothecia lecideine, 0.2-0.8 mm across, sessile and constricted at base, at first with a flat disc and a thick, smooth proper margin, finally often with a convex disc and emarginate, the disc black, often with a greenish hue, the margin jet black. Proper exciple dark violet grey to blackish in outer part, colourless in inner part, the pigmented part 20-35 µm thick, palisade-plectenchymatous, K+ violet, the inner part prosoplectenchymatous, filled with abundant crystals which are not soluble in K; epithecium violet grey to dark olive-green, K+ violet, covered in a fine epipsamma of 1-4 µm wide crystals which are insoluble in K; hymenium colourless, (40-)50–60 µm high; paraphyses weakly coherent, simple or most often apically bifurcate, 1-1.5 µm thick at base, 2-5-4 µm at apex; subhymenium colourless, c. 20 µm high, clearly distinct from the hypothecium; hypothecium very pale yellow, due do abundant 5-13(-17) µm wide, crystals well visible under polarized light. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (14-)14.5-16.5(-17.5) x (3.5-)4.5-5.5(-6) µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (1-)1.5-3(-3.5) µm, max. 1/5 of spore length. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia (exciple and epithecium) K+ violet. Chemistry: Sedifolia-grey pigment in apothecia. Note: a silicicolous species described from the Pyrenees (France), and widespread in eastern and southern Spain, mostly at low elevations; to be looked for in Italy, especially in Sardinia. For further details see Navarro-Rosinés & Llimona (2008).
