Description: Thallus small-squamulose to partly crustose-granular, gelatinous when wet, blackish brown, homoiomerous, with anastomosing hyphae. Apothecia zeorine, up to 1 mm across, numerous, immersed, arising in a tangle of generative hyphae, with an orange-brown disc and a finally excluded, slightly paler margin. Proper exciple of interwoven, gelatinized hyphae, golden yellow to reddish brown in upper part, almost colourless in lower part; epithecium reddish brown; hymenium colourless, I+ blue, K/I+ blue; paraphyses slender, coherent, branched and anastomosing; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, thin-walled, the outer layer K/I+ blue. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 17-35 x 8-15 µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial, the individual cells 5-8 µm wide, arranged in clusters. Spot tests K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on clay soil in man-made habitats, such as along dirt-roads, etc. A very rare species, most records are from the old agricultural landscape of eastern Europe. To be looked for in Northern Italy.
