Description: Thallus small-foliose, (1-)2-3(-5) cm wide, 75–90(-120) μm thick, gelatinous when wet, dark olive-green to dark bluish-grey, smooth or slightly wrinkled, the lobes rounded, imbricate, (1-)2-4 mm wide, with entire, sometimes lobed-phyllidiate margins, attached by whitish hapters. Pseudocortex poorly and incompletely developed on both upper and lower surfaces, of isodiametric to somewhat flattened 3-5 μm wide cells, the inner parts of thallus paraplectenchymatous throughout. Apothecia lecanorine, usually numerous, 0.4-1.5(-1.7) mm across, sessile, with a brown disc and a persistent, often granulose to finally phyllidiate thalline margin. Epithecium yellowish brown, 10-15 μm high; hymenium colourless, c. 100 μm high ; paraphyses mostly simple, 1-1.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells slightly swollen; hypothecium colourless to yellowish, 25-30 μm high. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the apex strongly thickened, the apical dome K/I+ pale blue, with a downwardly projecting K/I+ deep blue tubular structure. Ascospores 3-septate to submuriform, hyaline, ellipsoid to spindle-shaped, 20-29 x (6-)8-10 μm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells in chains). Spot test: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a rare, mainly Mediterranean species with some outposts in eastern Central Europe, growing on soil over siliceous substrata. To be looked for in Italy.
