Distribution:
Description: Thallus foliose, gelatinous and 50-75 µm thick when wet, more or less closely adnate, blue-grey, matt, a few cm in diam, the lobes flat, (0.5-)2-3 mm wide, smooth, with an often incised margin. Lower surface hairless, attached by scattered tufts of hapters. Upper and lower cortices consisting of a single layer of irregularly isodiametrical cells, internal part of thallus with loosely interwoven chains of Nostoc and hyphae. Apothecia common, lecanorine, laminal, sessile to substipitate, to 1 mm across, with a slightly concave to slightly convex, pale reddish brown disc and a narrow, often finally excluded thalline margin. Proper exciple of periclinally arranged hyphae; epithecium brownish; hymenium 75-105 µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses simple, 1-2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells slightly swollen; hypothecium colourless to pale yellow. Asci 4-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the apex strongly thickened, the apical dome K/I+ pale blue, with a downwardly projecting K/I+ deep blue tubular structure. Ascospores 3(-4)-septate to submuriform, hyaline, ellipsoid, (15-)16-20(-22) x (6-)7-8(-10) µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells 4-6 µm wide, arranged in short chains). Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a very rare species growing on periodically inundated substrata (roots, bases of trees, siliceous rocks), with a few records from the Western Alps (France). To be looked for in Italy.
Growth form: Foliose, narrow lobed
Substrata: bark and rocks
Photobiont: cyanobacteria, filamentous (e.g. Nostoc, Scytonema)
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Periodically submerged (e.g. in creeks)
