Description: Thallus crustose, probably not lichenized, inconspicuous to greyish, without a distinct prothallus. Perithecia, black, smooth and glossy, scattered singly, orbicular in outline, c. 0.1-0.2 mm across, not surrounded by a basal fringe, at first immersed, then superficial, with a centrally located ostiole. Involucrellum dimidiate, dark-brown, c. 50 µm thick, consisting of bark material and thick-walled, 3-5 µm wide, brown hyphae constricted at septa. Exciple poorly developed, colourless, intergrading with the involucrellum; pseudoparaphyses anastomosing, 1.5-3.5 µm thick, forming a net around the asci, the hymenial gel I-. Asci 6-8-spored, clavate, short- and broad-stalked, usually curved, bitunicate, with a very thick inner wall, the apex more or less truncate, the discharge fissitunicate. Ascospores 1-septate hyaline, narrowly fusiform, arcuate, 25-32.5 x 1.6-2.5 µm, thin-walled, attenuated at the distal end (sometimes they appear 2- to 3-pseudoseptate, but only one septum is observed in lactophenol cotton-blue). Photobiont absent, but thallus sometimes loosely associated with chlorococcoid algae. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a doubtfully lichenized species known from Spain and Morocco, growing on Opuntia in the Mediterranean belt. To be looked for in Mediterranean Italy.
