Description: Thallus crustose, lichenized, endosubstratic, pale grey or not visible. Perithecia dark brown to black, flask-shaped to subglobose, initially completely immersed but projecting with age, 0.5-0.9 mm tall (without neck), usually ca. 0.1 mm wide, the ostiole eccentric to lateral, often forming an up to 0.35 mm long neck. Involucrellum entire, brown, containing bark cells, 75-120 µm thick in upper part, thinner in lower part; exciple brownish, poorly developed; hymenium I+ blue-green turning orange, inspersed with oil droplets; paraphyses simple or only apically branched, periphyses absent. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical to obclavate, apically thickened, the inner wall indentation often cross-shaped in optical section, 100-140 x 30-40 µm. Ascospores 7-distoseptate, not constricted at septa, dark brown, fusiform, 30-42(-5) x 12-15 µm, the median cells largest. Pycnidia brown-black, c. 0.1 mm across. Microconidia thread-like, 12-28 x c. l µm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: an apparently rare species described from North America, with a single record from Austria (Aptroot & Berger 1994), mostly growing at the base of trunks of shaded, old deciduous trees with rough and superficially decaying bark. To be looked for in Italy.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark
Photobiont: Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
