in Degen, Flora Velebitica, 3: 310, 1938. Basionym: Polyblastiopsis meridionalis Zahlbr. - Annln K. K. naturh. Hofmus. Wien, 23: 223, 1909.
Synonyms:
Distribution: N - Ven (Harris 1973).
Description: Thallus inapparent, probably not lichenized. Perithecia bluish- to greenish-black, 0.4-0.6 mm in diam. circular or broadly ellipsoid in outline, usually with a central depression. Involucrellum bright green to green-clack (in water mounts), K-, N+ red, composed of dark hyphae mixed with bark cells; exciple greenish, poorly developed; hamathecium of up to 1(-2) µm thick, simple or sparingly branched and anastomosing paraphyses, the hymenial gel I-. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, with a more or less truncate apex, K/I-, the apex usually thickened internally but without an ocular chamber, 75-130 x 15-20 µm. Ascospores submuriform, with 7-10 transverse septa and 1(-2) longitudinal septa, constricted at the tranverse septa, oblong-ellipsoid, 18-26 x 7-8(-10) µm, without a gelatinous perispore, uni- or biseriately arranged in the asci. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a non-lichenized, saprophytic fungus described from Croatia (Fiume/Rjieka), growing on the smooth bark of deciduous trees. According to Harris (1973), material distributed by Massalongo from Veneto in Lich. Exs. ital. 43 (FH Tuck 4084) as Arthopyrenia cinerescens A. Massal. belong to this species. As the descriptions of the two species are quite different, it could be that the material distributed ny Massalongo was heterogeneous.
