Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, thick, rimose-areolate, whitish to brownish grey with a distinct yellow tinge, the areoles matt, angulose, slightly convex, to 2 mm wide, with a scabrid or rarely even surface; prothallus not present. Apothecia lecanorine, to 5 mm across, rounded or irregular, with a slightly concave to flat, smooth or scabrid, epruinose, brown disc and a well-developed, flexuose, often crenulate, up to 2 mm thick thalline margin that often has a flesh-coloured zone around the disc. Thalline exciple corticate, the cortex well developed, thick, not expanded at base, c. 60-75 μm thick, the medulla well differentiated; proper exciple c. 35 μm wide; epithecium brownish, C+ red; hymenium colourless, 250-320 μm high, amyloid; paraphyses thin, densely branched and anastomosing; hypothecium very pale yellow. Asci 6(-8)-spored, with thick, amyloid walls, without recognizable apical structures, Pertusaria-like. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid, (22-)45-65 x (15-)20-30 μm, rather thin-walled. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: upper part of cortex K-, C+ and KC+ yellow (variolaric acid), P-; lower part of cortex and medulla K-, C+ and C+ red (gyrophoric acid), P-. Chemistry gyrophoric (major) and lecanoric (minor) acids, variolaric acid.
Note: a silicicolous, Mediterranean species with a peculiar chemistry, known from the eastern Mediterranean region (Greece, Turkey see Kukwa 2009c). To be looked for in the Mediterraneran parts of Southern Italy.
