Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rather thick, rimose-areolate and verrucose, grey-green or yellowish. Apothecia perithecioid, immersed in 1-2(-3) mm wide, subglobose, basally slightly constricted thalline warts with a usually depressed apical part, opening through a small black pore, sometimes with a finally expanded disc, several per wart. Epithecium brown-grey to grey, K+ and C+ violet; hymenium colourless; ; paraphyses lax, branched and richly anastomosed; hypothecium colourless or yellowish. Asci (6-)8-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex with a broad ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I-, with an inner extensible layer, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (70-)85-110 x (30-)40-65 µm, with a thick double, smooth wall, Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K+ yellow turning red (needle-like crystals), C+ orange, KC+ orange, UV+ orange. Chemistry: thiophaninic and norstictic acids, very rarely with traces of stictic acid.
Note: a Mediterranean silicicolous species known from the Baleraic Islands and Greece, resembling P. rupicola, but with abundant norstictic acid. To be looked for in Mediterranean Italy.
