Pertusaria lactescens Mudd
Man. Brit. Lich.: 272, 1861.
Synonyms: Melanaria lactescens (Mudd) Erichsen; Melanaria urceolaria (Nyl.) Erichsen; Pertusaria spilomanthodes Nyl. ex W. Johnson; Pertusaria urceolaria Nyl.
Distribution: N - TAA (Clauzade & Roux 1985).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, whitish, cream-coloured or pale grey, delimited by a thin, white, fimbriate prothallus, at first smooth and continuous, later rimose-areolate, the areoles finely granular with c. 0.1 mm wide, crowded, simple, more or less globose isidia-like papillae which often degenerate into eroded, granular-sorediate patches. Apothecia rare, immersed in the areoles (2-5 per areole), with more or less expanded, brownish black but often white-pruinose, much divided discs forming flat, radiating clusters surrounded by a slightly raised, irregular, smooth or granular thalline margin. Epithecium brown, K+ violet; hymenium and hypothecium colourless. Asci 2(-4)-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex with a broad ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I-, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, at first hyaline but soon turning grey- or olive-black, ellipsoid, (70-)80-100(-140) x 55-85 µm, the wall transversally striate, 10-14 µm thick, 3-layered, the thin outer layer, K-, the inner 2 layers K+ violet-purple, the outer surface minutely pitted. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow turning red, C-, KC+ yellow-red, P+ yellow-orange, UV-. Chemistry: norstictic acid.Note: a rarely collected silicicolous species, also known from the British Isles, Spain, Greece and European Turkey.
