Description: Thallus inapparent, not lichenized, developing on mushrooums of the genera Trametes and Trichaptum. Apothecia stalked, unbranched, dull olivaceous brown to black, 0.5.0.8 mm tall and 0.04-0.07 mm thick. the stalk of periclinally arranged hyphae, pale and 2-3 µm thick in inner part, pale brown in outer part, the outer cells 2-3 times as long as wide, 4-5 µm thick, forming a thin cortex that continues upwards into the exciple; capitulum black, narrowly obconical to lenticular, up to 0.16 mm across. Exciple persistent, of dark brown, periclinally arranged hyphae; epithecium thin, dark brown; hypothecium pale; mazaedium absent. Asci 8-spored, narrowly cylindrical, with a strongly thickened apex penetrated by a narrow canal that widens at maturity, formed singly from hooked ascogenous hyphae, with uniseriately arranged ascospores, persisting until the ascospores are mature. Ascospores 1-celled to finally 1-septate, pale brown, broadly to narrowly ellipsoid, 11-14 x 3-4 µm, the wall smooth. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: all parts of the apothecia K-, N-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.
Note: a widespread bur rarely collected, perhaps also overlooked, holarctic, boreal-montane to cool-temperate species developing on the upper surface of shelf-mushrooms (Trametes and Trichaptum), often on algal colonies. To be looked for in Italy.
