Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose to subsquamulose, black, consisting of scattered, small, 0.8-1.2 mm wide (usually less), more or less round areoles/squamules with raised, wavy, sometimes indistinctly lobulate margins, without a distinct prothallus. Thallus section of parallel, longitudinally arranged hyphae forming a cellular pattern, the photobiont cells more or less arranged in vertical columns. Apothecia lecideine, 0.3-0.4 mm across, with a concave to flat, black disc and a distinct proper margin. Proper exciple of radiating hyphae; epithecium dark green or blue-green; hymenium colourless, amyloid; paraphyses distinctly septate, sparingly branched; subhymenium brownish. Asci 8-spored, apically thickened, with an amyloid cap. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, (9-)10-12 x 5-6 μm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia straight or slightly curved, 4,5-6.5 μm x c. 0.6 μm. Photobiont cyanobacterial, Scytonema-like. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a species closely related to P. tantaleum, described from the mountains of Croatia and also known from several scattered stations in western and Central Europe, including the French Alps (Roux & Coll. 2025); it grows on calcareous rocks with periodical water seepage after rain, in rather sheltered situations. Closely related to P. tremniacum. To be looked for in Italy.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: cyanobacteria, filamentous (e.g. Nostoc, Scytonema)
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
On otherwise dry surfaces with short periods of water seepage after rain
Poorly known taxon in need of further study
