Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, 0.05-0.08 mm thick, pale olive-brown, continuous to weakly rimose-areolate, the areoles flat, 0.2-0.5 mm wide, forming small patches delimited by a black prothallus. Medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine, black, sessile, (0.2-)0.3-0.5(-0.7) mm across, with a flat to slightly convex disc and a distinct, persistent proper margin. Proper exciple dark throughout, of radiating hyphae, with dark brown, carbonaceous outer cells; epithecium usually brown, N-, rarely with a faintly blue pigment reacting N+ pale red; hymenium colourless, 75-90 µm high, I+ blue; paraphysoids branched and anastomosing, readily separated in K, c. 1.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells to 3 µm, with a sharply delimited dark cap; hypothecium dark brown. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, with a well-developed tholus, lacking an ocular chamber, Rhizocarpon-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, 17.5-20 x 8.5-11 µm, halonate. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: a suboceanic species, most frequent in Western Europe, growing on sheltered surfaces of siliceous rocks in humid situations, often in open woodlands. To be looked for in Italy.
