Pseudotichia vermiculata (Nyl.) Schultz & M. Prieto

in Prieto & al., Stud. Mycol., 109: 618, 2024. Basionym: Collemopsis vermiculata Nyl. - Flora, 64, 34,: 529, 1881.
Synonyms: Psorotichia vermiculata (Nyl.) Forssell
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, black, dark brown or partially eroded and dirty grey, 0.75-1(-1.5) mm thick, ecorticate, homoiomerous, subgelatinous when wet, crustose-areolate, the areoles 0.4-1 mm wide, angular, more or less flat, with a rough surface, attached by stout rhizohyphae forming a cottony basal layer. Thallus paraplectenchymatous throughout in section, the hyphae forming an irregular network around single-celled cyanobionts, becoming vertical and loose, 5-6 x 2-3 µm, with thickened, gelatinous walls,. Apothecia cryptolecanorine, up to 0.8 mm across, with a roundish or somewhat distorted, dark reddish brown, concave to flat, rough and multi-umbonate disc, the thalline margin very indistinct, reduced to the remnants of the surrounding areole. Thalline exciple 42-75 µm thick; proper exciple well-developed, 50-110 µm thick apically, 50-95 µm thick laterally, pale reddish or brownish; hymenium 150-185 µm high, divided by intrusions of sterile hyphae into 65-110 µm wide partial hymenia; paraphyses distinct, septate, becoming loose, branched and anastomosing, 5.5-6 x 1.5-2 µm, the apical cells somewhat enlarged and submoniliform. Asci 8-spored, narrowly cylindrical, pointed at apex, with an I+ blue coat, thin-walled, often bulging with the wall disintegrating at spore maturity, or opening by apical ruptures, Lichina-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, 12-20 x 6-10 µm, the old ones very thick-walled, often oversized and sometimes globose to subglobose. Photobiont cyanobacterial, chroococcoid, of globose 3.5-6 µm wide cells surrounded by a thin, yellowish brown gelatinous sheath, Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a species known with certainty only from the type locality in Romania, but according to Prieto & al. (2014) probably more widespread in southern Europe. It grows on exposed limestone rocks with periodical seepage of water after rain. To be looked for in Italy.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: cyanobacteria, coccaceous (e.g. Gloeocapsa)
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
