Graphis Scripta, 18: 56, 2006. Basionym: Parmelia paleacea Fr. - Lich. Eur. Reform.: 97, 1831.
Synonyms: Psoroma hirsutulum auct. Scand. non Nyl. ex Cromb.; Psoroma hypnorum subsp. paleaceum (Fr.) Nyl.
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, granular to small-squamulose, the granules/squamules to 1 mm wide, grey-green when dry, bright green when wet, with long silky, white hairs, especially at margins, forming more or less orbicular, up to 5 cm wide patches. Upper and lower cortex paraplectenchymatous; medulla white, very thin, often indistinct, of loosely reticulate hyphae. Apothecia lecanorine, usually numerous, often aggregated, to 2 mm across, with a concave, brown, epruinose disc and a narrow, crenate, not squamulose thalline margin with silky, white hairs present also in the upper part. Thalline exciple thick, corticate; proper exciple poorly developed, subparaplectenchymatous; epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, I+ dark blue; paraphyses simple, submoniliform, the apical cells not swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, narrowly ellipsoid or cylindrical, the apex with a K/I+ deep blue central tube in a paler-staining tholus, and an internal, K/I+ dark blue ring-structure. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, subglobose, 15-20 x 10-14 µm with a minutely warted wall. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests; cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: on moist soil, encrusting bryophytes and plant debris. Overall distribution bipolar, but rare, with a single, historical record from the Alps (Germany), which requires confirmation. For further details see Timdal & Tønsberg (2006). To be looked for in the Italian Alps
