Pyrenodesmia circumalbata (Delile) I.V. Frolov & Vondrák

in Frolov & al., J. Syst. Evol., 59, 3: 470, 2020. Basionym: Lecidea circumalbata Delile - Fl. Égypte: Explic. Pl.: 156, tab. 59, fig. 8, 1813.
Synonyms: Callopisma aegyptiacum Müll. Arg.; Caloplaca aegyptiaca (Müll. Arg.) J. Steiner; Caloplaca circumalbata (Delile) Wunder; Pyrenodesmia aegyptiaca (Müll. Arg.) M. Choisy & Werner
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate, white to ochraceous brown, the areoles 0.2-0.5 mm wide, up to 0.8 mm thick, angular, slightly convex, with an irregular surface, sometimes delimited by a dark prothalline line. Apothecia lecanorine, (0.3-)0.4-0.8(-1.2) mm across, long remaining immersed in the areoles, finally (rarely) subsessile, with a black, sometimes faintly pruinose, flat to slightly convex disc and a white, smooth, persistent thalline margin. Exciple thin, dark in outer part; epithecium pale brown to brown, K+ violet; hymenium colourless, 70-110(-125) μm high, without crystals; paraphyses mostly simple, the apical cells to 3 μm wide; hypothecium colourless or yellowish, c. 100 µm high, without vertical rows of small round paraplectenchymatous cells. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, 12-18 x 5-8(-11) μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 1.5-4 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: Sedifolia-grey pigment in the apothecia.
Note: a still rather poorly known calcicolous species, described from Egypt and also known from Spain, Greece, Turkey and the Irano-Turanian region. To be looked for in the driest parts of Mediterranean Italy, especially in Sicily.
Growth form: Crustose
