Lecania fructigena Zahlbr.
in Hasse, Bryologist, 17: 61, 1914.
Synonyms:
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, of densely crowded, > 1 mm wide warts which are clearly constricted at base, the marginal ones not elongate nor radiating, grey to pale yellowish brown, sometimes appearing bluish or blackish when overgrown by cyanobacteria, without a distinct prothallus. Cortex pseudoparenchymatous, of elongated, anticlinally oriented cells, sometimes overlain by an epinecral layer; medulla white, poorly differentiated from the cortex. Apothecia lecanorine, broadly sessile to almost stipitate being usually located at the top of the thalline warts, 0.5-1(-1.4) mm across, with a red-brown to dark brown, slightly concave to flat, epruinose disc and a white to grey, 0.1-0.2 mm thick, often flexuous or crenulate thalline margin. Thalline exciple corticated, distinctly paraplectenchymatous, rich in algal cells; epithecium reddish brown to dark brown; hymenium colourless, 40-70 µm high; paraphyses slightly clavate in upper part, sometimes submoniliform; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical to clavate, with a K/I+ blue tholus and a central non-amyloid area, Bacidia-type. Ascospores (0-)1-septate, hyaline, oblong to ellipsoid, 10-15(-18) x (3-)4-5(-5.5) µm, >2.3 times a long as wide, without a gelatinous perispore. Pycnidia often numerous, immersed, 75-150 µm in diam., brown near ostiole. Conidia thread-like, slightly to strongly curved, 14-24 x c. 0.8 µm Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: a species described from the Pacific west coast of North America and later reported from the Atlantic coasts of Europe, growing on siliceous rocks, usually in the supralittoral zone, rarely somewhat inland. According to M. Bertrand (com. or.) it was recently found also along the Mediterranean coast of southern France. To be looked for in the Tyrrhenian region, especially in Sardinia.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
Taxon bound to maritime-coastal situations
