Distribution:
Description: Thallus foliose, orange-red, rather tightly attached, forming several cm wide rosettes, the lobes irregularly branched, (0.2-)0.5-1(-1.5) mm wide, flat to convex, with granulose, globose or slightly elongate, straight or occasionally slightly curved, 0.14-0.25 mm thick isidia; lower surface concave or plicate, dirty white with yellow margins, attached by several whitish hapters. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous, of (3-)5-7mm wide, rounded cells, 10-15 µm thick; algal layer up to 60 µm thick, the hyphae (2-)3-4 µm thick, mostly running parallel to the substrate; lower cortex paraplectenchymatous, 10-20 µm thick. Apothecia lecanorine/zeorine, common but usually few and scattered, (0.5-)0.75-1.25(-1.5) mm across, some of them often developing at the top of isidia, with a dark orange, flat disc and an initially raised, later often reduced, granular-isidiate thalline margin. Thalline exciple 100-120 µm wide laterally, corticate, the cortex orange, 20-30 µm thick; proper exciple 50-70 µm wide; epithecium orange, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless, 60-75 µm high; paraphyses 1.5-2.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells swollen, up to 5 µm wide; hypothecium colourless, 50-60 µm high. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, 11-13(-15) x 7-9 µm, the septa (2-)3-4(5) µm. Pycnidia unknown. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: upper surface K+ purple-red, C-, KC-, P-, UV+ intensely orange-red. Chemistry: parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid, corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
Note: a mainly Arctic species with a few records from the Eastern Alps (Austria), often growing together with R. elegans near or above treeline. To be looked for in the Italian Alps.
Growth form: Foliose, narrow lobed
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by isidia, or isidia-like structures (e.g. schizidia)
