Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic and inapparent or very thinly episubstratic and then more or less rimose-areolate, whitish to grey when overgrown by cyanobacteria. Apothecia lecideine (0.7-)1-3.2 mm across, adnate, variably shaped (round to oval) finally lobed or divided by cracks into 2-4 units, with a convex, usually bluish-pruinose disc and a 0.05-0.1 mm thick, epruinose or rarely slightly pruinose, sometimes finally excluded proper margin. Proper exciple 90-150 µm thick, dark brown in outer part, colourless within, the cells of the outer rim clearly darker and wider – (5.5-)7.5-10 µm – than the apical cells of paraphyses; epithecium brown, c. 7-10 µm high; hymenium colourless, 120-165(-170) µm high, euamyloid; paraphyses coherent, simple or rarely sparingly branched and anastomosing 1.5-2.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells, 3-5 µm wide; subhymenium colourless, 30-40 µm high, subparaplectenchymatous, the subhymenial medulla 100-185 µm thick, rich in crystals. Asci 100-150-spored, cylindrical-clavate, strongly thickened at apex, the apical dome K/I–, the outer coat K/I+ blue, 68-103 x 19-27 µm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to oblong-ellipsoid, (5.5-)6-8(-10) x (2.5-)3-4(-5) µm, (1.4-)1.7-2.2(-3.1) times as long as wide. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a recently-described calcicolous species resembling S. platycarpoides, but with different spores, hitherto known only from a few localities in southern France (Vaucluse and Gard), but probably more widespread. For further details see Roux & al. (2023). To be looked for in Mediterranean Italy.
