Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic and not evident or very thinly episubstratic and then whitish and more or less distinctly rimose-areolate. Apothecia lecideine, (0.5-)1-4.5 mm across, at first adnate, then sessile and constricted at base, with a flat to finally convex, dark brown to black-brown, but usually bluish-pruinose disc which is often subdivided by cracks into 2-11 parts, and a 0.15-0.3 mm thick, finally more or less deeply lobed, finally sometimes excluded, pruinose or more rarely epruinose proper margin. Proper exciple (150-)230-390 µm thick, dark brown in outer part, colourless within, the outer cells much darker and slightly larger than the apical cells of paraphyses; epithecium brown, 7-10 µm high; hymenium colourless, (85-)120-150(-165) µm high, euamyloid; paraphyses coherent, simple or rarely sparingly branched and anastomosing, 1.5-2.5(-3) µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 3-6 µm wide; subhyménium colourless, 35-75 µm high, subparaplectenchymatous, the subhymenial medulla 120-195 µm thick, rich in crystals. Asci 150-200-spored, cylindrical-clavate, strongly thickened at apex, the apical dome K/I-, the outer coat K/I+ blue, 60-110 x 16.5-24 µm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to suboblong, (3-)4-6(-8) x (1.5-)2-3(-3.5) µm, (1.5-)1.8- 3(-4) times as long as wide. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a recently-described calcicolous species hitherto known from several stations in the French Alps, one of which (Mr. Cenis) is not far from the Italian border; see Roux & al. (2023) for further details. To be looked for in the Italian Alps.
